On August 7 Manfred Gans and the Marines of No. 41 (RM) Cdo. were ordered to assist in the push against the Germans eastward toward the Seine River. They would first make their way southeastward from Sallenelles to Troarn, then head east to Dozule, located about eighteen miles east of Caen. As Gans later recalled, “Every day we got loaded on trucks, pushed on, dumped somewhere or another, and did another night attack. It was ten attacks in a row with the Germans on the run.”

During one such movement A Troop, No. 41 (RM) Cdo., was crossing a field surrounded by thick hedgerows. Leading the men was the A Troop commanding officer, Captain Stevens. As Stevens went forward, Manfred spotted a German sniper in the hedgerows and killed him with a remarkable long-range shot. Gans never had any regrets about killing German soldiers: “On the battlefield you often don’t know who shoots at you. It could be Adolf Hitler himself who is shooting at you, or it could be a fifteen-year-old boy from my hometown. If a regime is so depraved to put a fifteen-year-old boy in the front line, it’s not my sin or fault that I have to shoot at him.”
